Ka·li·na·go, noun. foundation

[from Kalinago (also Karifuna, singular), the endonym of the Indigenous people of the Lesser Antilles; originating from the Orinoco River basin in present-day Venezuela and the Guyana Shield, they migrated north through the Caribbean archipelago. Renamed "Carib" as a colonial exonym weaponised to label them cannibals and justify enslavement and conquest; the word "cannibal" itself derives from the corruption of their name; the Caribbean Sea owes its name to them; officially reclaimed from "Carib" to "Kalinago" in Dominica in 2015;]

Kalinago is a cultural foundation and platform rooted in the Caribbean and the Archipelagic Americas. We produce exhibitions, residencies, publications, research, and collaborative projects that centre Afro-descendant and Indigenous artists, thinkers, and communities, and we preserve and pass on the knowledge they carry. We work from the premise that the Caribbean and its diaspora have always generated distinct aesthetic, political, and intellectual traditions.
